So true. I believe in the power of positive psychology as one of the best tools to improve engagement especially when paired with care and attention.

👍positive attention and focusing on strengths create exponential results. Very good articulation.

I have people in my classes text loved ones to ask them “what are my strengths?” because the class participants have never been told. #ask #strengths

Wish I could say I was surprised.

My students do both self-assessment, then mini-360. Then I make them compare. Helps them see hidden strengths and weaknesses. 360 reveals how they are perceived by supervisor, peer, and someone they have supervised. We talk about whether they change behavior as roles change.

Buckingham dislikes “radical transparency” and constant feedback almost as much as I do. Inhuman and counterproductive, even if Bridgewater is an exception. Give me $10M in tax-free laundered $20s and you could not get me to work at Bridgewater for an hour.

Read Buckingham’s book please. 360s questionable—because the judgement of the raters sucks.

The judgment of the “raters” has prolonged a self-serving system that has out lasted it sell-by date by decades…
Dennis Shea
@DennisG_Shea
Yes, I don’t advocate for that, but I also agree with Dunning that poor info and feedback environment inhibits development. Leaders who want to improve need to build a fertile environment.
Dennis Shea
@DennisG_Shea
And that’s something we discuss. Do you agree with what they say? Why? What do you think you see differently?
The point isn’t to accept the raters’ evaluation as definitive truth.
It’s to use it to ask and discuss important questions.

You may not have to, but does the organization? What if your evaluator shows Dark Triad tendencies? What recourse does a junior person have?
Dennis Shea
@DennisG_Shea
It may not be clear what I am talking about.
My organization makes no use of this exercise. It’s an assignment for a class I teach. Students select their evaluators, and I trust them to pick individuals whose judgment they trust.
Dennis Shea
@DennisG_Shea
And part of the exercise is discussing the responses. In short, we talk about how a junior person should bring their critical thinking to any feedback, and not simply accept what they recive as fact.
